Shashank to take on Garvit in U-16 final

The heralded names have fallen by the wayside with two Delhi youngsters - Shashank Nautiyal and Garvit Batra - emerging as the unlikely heroes in the boys' under-16 singles category after four days of gruelling tennis at the Fenesta Open National Championships.





Both unseeded players will battle it out for the title on Saturday after yet another dominant performance which saw them storming into the final.

Delhi boy Shashank was stretched to three sets by Prajwal Dev in the semi-final on Friday but the former came good when it mattered as he overpowered his Karnataka opponent 7-6(3), 4-6, 6- 1 in two hours and 37 minutes.




Garvit, on the other hand, fought back after the initial hiccups when he lost the first four games of the match to beat M Sai Nikhil 7-5, 6-2. In the girls' under-16 singles, the battle for the title will be between top two seeds S Snehadevi and Pranjalla Yadlapalli.





Snehadevi had an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Akshara Iska, while Pranjalla beat Ramya Natarajan 6-4, 6-2. In the boys' under-16 semi-final, Garvit was broken twice by Nikhil in the first four games of the opening set before he returned the favour in the next four.

After that, Nikhil could hold his serve just once with Garvit surging ahead with a break in the 11th game.




Garvit did not let the momentum slip and came back in the second set with his confidence sky high.


The Delhi boy broke Nikhil in the very first game to take the lead and thereafter, Nikhil could hold his serve just twice as Garvit served out the set and match in the eighth game.

In the other semi-final clash, Prajwal, seeded 11th, was broken in his very first service game as Shashank made his intentions clear right at the start.

Prajwal clawed his way back to win four straight games late in the set.

However, Shashank held his nerve in the tie-breaker and took the lead heading into the second set. Prajwal won the second set to draw level before he ran out of steam in the decider.



Several unforced errors led to his undoing and Shashank capitalised on it to win the set rather comfortably. Top seed in the boys under-14 singles, BR Nikshep, will face West Bengal lad Sanil Jagtiani in the final on Saturday.




Sanil overcame Alex Solanki 7-5, 6-4 in his semi-final, while Chandigarh boy Paramveer Singh Bajwa could not last the test against Nikshep and lost 6-3, 6-4.


The day also saw doubles finals in which Vishu Prasad and Deepak Vishwakarma won the boys under-16 title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Tejas Kapoor and Raswant Ravi.

Himani Mor and Vanshika Sawhney defeated Jhanvi Gupta and Vineeta Singh 6-2, 7-5 to win the under-16 girls doubles title.

Nitin Sinha and Vikash Singh won the boys under-14 doubles championship, while in the girls section, Nandini Sharma and Mihika Yadav emerged winners.
